| Celebrate the OPMI Lumera®! |
| |
Carl Zeiss Introduces Stereo Coaxial Illumination to Surgical microscopy
 | | We are thrilled to introduce the OPMI Lumera® and OPMI Lumera® T, the latest ophthalmic surgical microscopes from the most trusted name in ophthalmology, Carl Zeiss. |
| |
Both the OPMI Lumera® and OPMI Lumera® T are equipped with groundbreaking Stereo Coaxial Illumination technology (SCITM). The result of years of proprietary research, SCITM heralds a completely new quality of red reflex which is high in contrast, stable and enables first-class detail recognition. Even with mature cataracts, different tissues can be easily recognized and removed. Intuitive operation of the OPMI Lumera® and OPMI Lumera® T with SCITM allows the surgeon to focus on the procedure rather than the microscope.
So excited were we about the OPMI Lumera®'s unique red reflex, we asked Dr. Warren Hill to test drive it for us. Says Dr Hill, "I have never seen an eye like this - it is simply amazing. The depth of field, the contrast, the red relex - it is really unique in ophthalmology."

| |
In addition to the outstanding suitability for surgery on the anterior segment, OPMI Lumera® and OPMI Lumera® T are equipped with the proven features for all types of ophthalmic procedures, including posterior segment surgery. These include:
- DeepView, the depth-of-field management system, which enables surgeons to further optimize the system for depth of field or light transmission.
- Apochromatic optics to achieve a high-contrast image with excellent quality and high light transmission.
- Retinal protection device, UV filtration and GG475 filter to protect the patient’s eyes against phototoxic injuries.
The Superlux® Eye xenon light source helps surgeons see the eye in its natural colour. The new HaModeTM filter facilitates switching to a light spectrum equivalent to halogen, if preferred. Another highlight of the OPMI Lumera® T is the integrated video monitor – no need for an additional monitor!
OPMI Lumera® T is optionally equipped with a completely integrated assistant's microscope. As with previous ZEISS microscopes, a second surgeon selects the focus and magnification independently of the main surgeon, thus enabling active assistance or teaching. With the ophthalmology-specific MediLive® Trio EyeTM video camera, intra-operative visualisation has been taken to a higher level.
OPMI Lumera® and OPMI Lumera® T - see more! Please take the time to come and visit our booth at the RANZCO in November to see just how the OPMI Lumera will redefine ophthalmic surgery. In addition please feel free to discuss with us our extensive trade-in program to help you upgrade to the latest in surgical microscopy today.
And don't miss out on the fantastic opportunity to win a NOKIA N93 mobile phone at the RANZCO, click here for more information (58kB).

IOLMaster – Tips for difficult scanning situations
The IOL Master uses a 780nm laser to measure axial length. This technique offers significant advantages over ultrasound, but it also comes with some difficulties with regards to significant ocular opacities where the measurement may be impeded. To get the best axial length measurement in such eyes try the following tips:
 | | Try measuring the axial length through various parts of the measurement circle. When you find the position with the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), stick to this position for the remainder of your scans. This can be effective with posterior sub-capsular cataracts in particular. See an example of a measuring sequence on the left hand side. |
| |
 | | If you are having difficulty penetrating nuclear cataracts, try defocusing the IOL Master by moving the joystick forwards and backward so that the aiming spot fills up the entire measurements circle. See example on the left. |
| |
 | | Make sure that you examine any multiple peaks closely. The best waveforms will feature “Crysler Building” shaped peaks whereas multiple peaks should be treated with more suspicion.
Best practice would have at least four scans within ±0.02mm, all with SNR measurements of greater than 2.0.

Ver 5.0 Advanced Technology software
The good news is the arrival of Ver 5.0 Advanced Technology software. The software adds together individual scans to produce a composite signal that allows measurement of previously impenetrable cataracts, even if none of the individual measurements attains satisfactory signal-to-noise ratios.
