June 19, 2008:
Last month, ophthalmologists Dr. Iain Dunlop and Dr. Gagan Khannah at the Canberra Eye Hospital performed the first refractive surgery in the Southern Hemisphere using the new ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser system.
The VisuMax system enables a newer and safer method of creating the corneal flap allowing surgeons to operate more precisely, safely and in particular, gently. With its inspired design concept, the VisuMax is a superbly engineered corneal workstation, and, when combined with the MEL 80 excimer laser system, as at the Canberra Eye Hospital, unsurpassed patient outcomes are expected.
The most widely used laser surgery procedure for treating refractive errors is the so-called LASIK method. Following the creation of a thin corneal flap, an excimer laser is used to perform the actual refractive correction. Until now, corneal incisions were largely conducted mechanically with a so-called microkeratome, and then an excimer laser produced the previously calculated optimum form of the cornea.
The VisuMax system is designed to provide smooth and precise flap cutting capabilities for refractive laser surgery, which marks a new dimension of safety and accuracy. Due to its advanced technology, treatments are extremely smooth, precise and highly reproducible.
Commenting on the new addition, Dr. Iain Dunlop states “This femtosecond laser is remarkably reliable, stable and accurate. It is extremely well received by patients who remark on the unexpected comfort of the flap creation step. Operation of the VisuMax is very intuitive and informative to the surgeon, a reflection of the strong design team that has developed the laser.”
